Seeb Beach – A Walk Back in Time
It seems to me that those of us who live at the Seeb end of Muscat have a long way to travel in order to get to a decent beach. To the east there are numerous options; from the popular but busy Quram beach, or continue further to the delights of the Oman Dive Centre and other lovely hotel beaches around the Bustan peninsula. However this all depends on what you are going to the beach for. Those who wish to sunbathe or swim in the sea, as a westerner it may seem safer and more relaxing to go to one of Muscat’s private members club such as the PDO, Shafaq club or even the ODC. There is less chance of cultural issues and usually less litter. But if you want a real feel for how Oman was in days gone by, on your doorstep, then take a wander to Seeb Beach.
Along the beach you will find numerous fishing huts, locals kicking around a football (if you go early evening), many people taking a walk along the pier and watching the sun set. Children playing in the low rollers of the gulf of Oman, while a few of the local fishermen repair their nets while chatting and drinking chai on the wooden boats. As you walk by children greet you with laughter and smiles, couples walk along and let the world just pass them by. It seems this is a lovely walk to be able to take, especially when it is less than five minutes drive from Seeb market and there is ample parking.
If you are slightly braver you can venture in to a local coffee shop and pick up a snack and a juice, maybe even sit down and have a local fish dish or a coffee. If you do try this you will struggle to spend even 5 Rial for two of you. These are the real local cafes in Oman, not the Costa Coffee in the malls.
So if you fancy a bit of authentic Oman, an evening stroll, or just to watch the sunset with those you love; head down to Seeb Beach.
Directions
I recommend taking the Al Khawd round about (by McDonalds and Ramees Shopping) off the Sultan Quaboos highway, taking Al Shimayla St to the north. Right at the roundabout after Ramees, then follow the road straight until you hit the coast road. Take a left along the coast road (5204 Way) and park anywhere along here. Take a walk to the north and head towards the pier for the best views of the sun set.
